In high-speed differential signaling systems, the integrity of the data stream hinges upon precise electrical impedance matchings. Unused network ports, long structural copper cables, and complex bus topologies act as open circuits that generate significant radio frequency (RF) signal reflections. What is the primary difference between a passive loopback plug and an RJ45 terminator?

A loopback plug routes the TX (transmit) pins directly back to the RX (receive) pins to test and diagnose physical port functionality. An RJ45 terminator, however, contains internal carbon-film or metal-film resistors connected from each differential pair to ground (or between the positive/negative lines) to absorb signal energy and eliminate wave reflections on inactive or open lines.

Can standard ethernet terminators handle high PoE voltages?

No, standard terminators will quickly overheat and fail if exposed to DC voltages from active PoE switches. If deploying terminators on PoE-enabled ports, you must request our specialized "PoE-safe" terminators, which utilize series DC-blocking capacitors rated for at least 100V to protect the resistive network while maintaining RF termination.
